1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 t. vanilla
2 1-oz squares of unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 2/3 c cake flour
1/2 t salt
1/2 t soda
1/2 c sweet or sour milk
Nuts if desired
Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar; add egg, vanilla, and chocolate; blend well. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk; add nuts. Drop from teaspoon 2" apart onto greased cooky sheet. Bake at 350 10-12 min. While warm, frost w/ chocolate frosting. Makes 2 1/2 doz cookies.
This is IT!!! Hurray!!! I substituted cocoa powder for the unsweetened chocolate, which I guessed Grandma did, too. This brought the shortening up to 10T and 2/3 cup cocoa. I used buttermilk for sour milk: does anyone know what Grandma used? I am SO HAPPY to have my best comfort food. If she were here right now, I'm pretty sure I would have already had some. Love you, Grandma! I miss you!
